Un ponte tra gli anni 70 e il pop di oggi, una dolcezza che avvolge, un’atmosfera di passato che contribuisce a rendere malinconici tutti gli undici brani dell’album. Possono ricordare qua e là i Jethro Tull ma i Midlake non devono pagar tributi a nessuno, hanno classe ed eleganza e riconfermano con The courge of others gli splendori del precedente lavoro.

Quanti nomi vengono tirati in ballo per descrivere la musica dei quattro giovani, giovanissimi ragazzi californiani… Dai Beach Boys ai Big Star, ecc. ecc. ma il ragazzetto che scrive questi brani ha appena 18 anni e i suoi compari poco di più. Troppo freschi per essere freak. E’ più probabile che siano ascolti recenti ad influenzare gli Avi Buffalo: Yoshimi battles dei Flaming Lips o le magie dei Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, quelli che cantavano in gaelico e sfondavano le classifiche britanniche degli anni ‘90 con dischi pieni di suoni mistico-psichedelici ma di impatto, facili ed elaborati nello stesso tempo.
L’album di debutto include ovviamente What’s in it for?, 45 giri che ha spopolato tra i loro coetanei “bloggers” nel web, e l’incantevole, straordinaria What’s your dirty mind?

Atmosfera grigio-metallica, suoni mandati in distorsione, voce inscatolata perché appaia lontana, freddi battiti elettro-guidati al posto di batterie vere.
Eppure i Radio Dept. sono riusciti a proporre un dream-pop veramente sognante, dolce, con momenti estatici clamorosi. We would fall against the tide (retro dell’ormai storico 45 giri di
debutto) è una delle più belle canzoni di fine secolo. Raccolgono ciò che di grande è stato fatto negli anni ‘90 da Slowdive e Ride, che a loro volta spostarono il noise dei Jesus & Mary Chain verso più tranquille dilatazioni psichedeliche. Ed aggiungono quel senso della melodia che dà al pop made in Svezia un tocco in più.
Il nuovo album è ancora una sorpresa ma contiene David, brano stellare uscito come singolo qualche tempo fa e ciò basta per riempirci di speranza.
